STMNT

Jenessa and Madison Olsen are locally based digital entrepreneurs striving to revolutionize the fashion. The sisters founded their online peer-to-peer marketplace STMNT to answer two nagging questions: “What do I wear?” and “How can I help?”

STMNT is a mobile sharing platform where local users can rent clothes to each other. The purpose is to discourage buying brand new occasion or formal wear items for one-time wear, while still giving users the versatility of a large wardrobe.

Before STMNT, Jenessa Olson had already been lending clothes to her classmates for interviews and formals. She realized that her peers were also personally feeling the negative impact of over-consumption. “When there are new trends out every week, you feel out of style a week after you buy something. Online, there is a whole negative mentality about outfit repeating.”

The mobile application, which is expected to launch this March, is Jenessa Olson’s response to ethical issues within the fashion industry. “[W]e’re trying to solve this mass consumption of new clothes that are thrown out consistently… instead of buying new stuff all the time, let’s access each other’s closets,” she explained.

While the app may still be in development, STMNT is already operating in full-swing. The sisters are bringing their peer-to-peer renting service IRL, with appearances at various events and markets this year.
