WHAT IS A FOOD CO-OPERATIVE?

A food co-operative is a not-for-profit food distribution outlet. Unlike a traditional privately or publicly owned grocery store, members of the co-operative manage it. This means that the organization is not only community funded, but also that all decisions regarding production and distribution of the food are decided by the members.

Rather than accumulating profit for investors, a co-operative operates to meet the goals and ethical values of its members.

According to sustain, the main things community food co-ops have in common are they:

  • are run by the community for the community

  • aim to supply produce at affordable prices

  • are run on a not for profit basis

  • generally rely on the support of volunteers, either in the day-to day running or on the committee

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In order to enjoy special pricing at the Co-op, you have to be a member. Each household pays a $40 loan per year to the Co-op, stopping once a membership has paid $400. This $40 is made up of four $10 loans paid each quarter of the year, and helps support the co-op. If you leave the co-op, that loan will be paid back to you.

To help cover the operating costs of the Co-op, a weekly service charge will be charged every week, paid on the first shop of that week.

Individual Pricing: $4.14 (+HST)

Household Pricing: $8.28 (+HST)

Drop by the London Food Co-op, located at 621 Princess Ave. in downtown London.
